The Inquisitors were terrorists in whom the Catholic Church had vested authority to suppress heresy by whatever means available.

Although founded by the Church at the Council of Nicea in 325 CE, the Inquisition did not reach full bloom until the middle ages.

The Inquisitor's goals were to restore the accused to the faith. But some ten percent were executed. The accused could either accept punishment and return to the faith or be burned at the stake. The accused could not question their accusers. Accused were more often than not tortured into confessing. Life imprisonment or burning at the stake were common results. In either of these cases, the accused person's property was confiscated by the inquisitor. Secular authorities not only condoned such behavior, but often carried out the sentence.
